Lamar University's Bachelor of Music Degree program is incredibly versatile - no matter your interest, we've got a track for you! All music students will take some of the same core classes to learn about music history, theory, sight reading, ear training and seven semesters of recital attendance. The rest of your courses will be based on the music specialty of your choice: performance, composition or education.
If you love to show your talent in front of adoring crowds, a Bachelor of Music in Performance is the choice for you. Your courses will be designed to hone your chosen talent(s). The four performance tracks include piano and band, piano and choral, voice, and winds or percussion. If you choose the piano and choral track, for example, you'll take a lot of piano and voice lessons in addition to the music core.
Do you spend your free time writing music? Then you should pursue the Bachelor of Music in Composition! Like the performance concentration, you can choose from tracks in piano and band, piano and choral, vocal, and winds or percussion. The courses in this program will teach you how to compose music for an array of performances, from symphonies to operas!
Maybe you'd prefer to spend your career sharing music with students. The Bachelor of Music leading to teacher certfication is designed to help you become a top notch music educator. Choose from band, choral, or orchestra tracks to specialize your education. After you complete the music and education program requirements, you can pursue teacher certification.
As a performance or composition major, you have many options open to you upon graduation, depending on the areas in which you network and perform during your studies; we highly recommend further graduate and even postgraduate study to take you to the heights of your career as a professional performer or composer.
